CARREAU

CARREAU
Andromache Benoist (born January 8, 1875) was an American con artist. She is believed to have participated in most of the largest-scale thefts of the early 20th century. She is portrayed in the film As de Carreau (1976), a dramatized account of the Gabarre Train Heist of 1934. The film has been lost to time.
CARREAU is a biographer’s trick; a quilt stitched by neither scholar nor artist. In monochrome shades of twentieth-century fiction, semiotics, and poetry, CARREAU chases the spectral X of its ego—a legendary dandy, a criminal mastermind, a woman who never was—and finds each switchback and dead end littered with diamonds.
170+ pages of my own illustrations and writing interspersed with bibliographic material, all compiled over the course of the past two years. Currently available in PDF and EPUB formats, which both contain functional TOC links. Experienced best in two-page view to preserve continuous spreads.
I hope to open preorders for the print run later this year! Stay tuned for more information!
This project would not have been possible without the village of incredible artists who lend me their brilliance all the time, most notably the minds behind Nghi (Elissa; @elissastillstands on Tumblr), Elodie (Seb; @greengeist on Bluesky and @green-geist on Tumblr), and Manon (my darling A, @currantgleam most places).
This book is intended for readers over the age of 18. Please be mindful of explicit visual content and racist language (quoted from historical text).
